Wedding Venues - Here comes the bride - Bang goes the budget.

Is it advisable for conference venues to diversify and offer out their services as Wedding venues?

Conferencing Weekly looks at the pros and cons and speaks to venues with differing opinions

The wedding business can be a lucrative market for not only hotel food and beverage revenues, but also accommodation for guests, overnight stays for hen and stag dues and entertainment.

Weddings usually take place when conferences usually don’t, which is a bonus in having business all year round. Hotels love having weddings and receptions in the summer months and weekends.

The wedding business, is profitable and worthwhile, however it is not a booming market. According to national statistics online, ‘In 2005 there were 283,730 marriages, 10% down on 2004.’ Expect this trend to follow, especially with rising house prices, couples can’t afford to get on the property ladder, let alone find some extra cash to get married.

Michael Morris, MD of Morris Conferencing told Conferencing Weekly, “Weddings are great for off peak business, for venues, but not so great for conference agencies. We do often find that when trying to place corporate conferences with low budgets in the low season times, we find the spaces are often blocked at hotels.”

Venues obviously like wedding business, is it time perhaps for conference agents to diversify and expand into this market?
